How It Works

The Salish Sea is an Estuarine Ecosystem. By Ecosystem we mean the results of the interaction of the living organisms with the physical environment. By estuarine we mean an ecosystem where fresh water from land drainage mixes with ocean water. Estuaries are among the richest of the world’s ecosystems.

The fundamental property of the estuarine ecosystem is how the fresh water mixes with the salt: Estuarine Circulation. Let’s start there.

How do the tides affect the ecosystem? Let's look at how the tides move the water in the Salish Sea: Tides

Decomposition is an important part of any ecosystem. See an interesting experiment on the Decomposition page.
