Unapologetically Black

Bold, graphic yellow, green, and red squares and triangles cascading downward

Welcome! We are so glad that you are joining in the celebration. Black History month, which started as a week to acknowledge the contributions of African Americans throughout U.S. History, has blossomed into so much more. It is a time to recognize that Black History is American history and honor the influences that the Black Diaspora has had and continues to have on the world. This is a time to reflect on our past, engage in the present, and create a better future. A future that where members of the Black Community can live and flourish, unapologetically.

This year’s theme of “Unapologetically Black”, centers members of the Black Community. We explore how we can show up as our authentic selves and encourage allies to create spaces where Blackness is not only centered but uplifted. Allies, we invite you into community, to learn what it means to be anti-racist and what your role and responsibility is in creating safer spaces for Black communities to thrive. We hope that you take the time to explore, reflect, understand, and celebrate the Black experience in the array of offerings during this month-long celebration.

While Black History Month is a designated time to spotlight and highlight Blackness and the Black community, we encourage you to go a step further. Challenge yourself to advocate for the Black community every single day. We invite you to begin this journey by engaging with the Black Student Coalition; a space dedicated to centering our Black students throughout the year.

A special thank you to the members of the Black History Month Planning Committee for the time, hard work, dedication, and care that they have provided in organizing this month of events and in the work that they do with our students. This work is a labor of love. Your love and care has been and continues to be healing and transformative. Thank you for all that you do.

Warmly,

Nia Gipson, Coordinator of the Black Student Coalition, Black History Month Planning Committee Co-Chair

Chelsea Joefield, Ethnic Student Center Program Manager and Club Advisor, Black History Month Planning Committee Co-Chair

  • Guest Lecture by Dr. Crystal Rudds: "Invisibility Blues: Interiors and Interiority in Public Housing Narratives"

    February 27, 2023, 4:30pm
    VU 552

The English Department will host Dr. Crystal Rudds. “Invisibility Blues: Interiors and Interiority in Public Housing Narratives" examines depictions of housing in narratives ranging from Gloria Naylor's 1980s Brewster Place trilogy to Barry Jenkins' 2016 film Moonlight. Focusing on the latter, Rudds argues that urban films that feature public housing as a setting draw dissembling portraits of Black masculinity while seeming to tell all about public housing spaces. Moonlight’s aesthetic defamiliarization sets it apart and helps us think through the problem of (re)producing the private spaces of Black men for public consumption. Dr. Crystal S. Rudds is Assistant Professor of English at The University of Utah. She served as the assistant editor of the oral history, High Rise Stories: Voices from Chicago Public Housing (2013) and is currently working on a book project that explores representations of public housing in film, African American literature, photography, and ethnographic narratives.
