The Master in Teaching (MIT) program is designed for candidates who wish to complete a master’s degree while earning state of Washington residency certification to teach at the secondary level (middle, junior high, and high school). Our comprehensive MIT program is firmly backed by current research on effective teaching and the promotion of student learning. The MIT program can be completed in five quarters, including the student teaching (internship) and is available at WWU's Bellingham campus or at WWU's Everett site.

This updated master’s degree is designed for educators who want to deepen their knowledge and practice in language and literacy instruction. It is ideal for classroom teachers and those who are or want to become reading specialists or literacy coaches. Graduates will leave with a strong understanding of literacy research and theory and effective teaching of language, reading, and writing. The Language and Literacy program has four main components: foundations, core study, independent research, and study in a concentration area. May provide Washington state additional endorsement in reading, ESOL, or bilingual education.

Graduate study leading to a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology is offered with two options: exercise science and sport and exercise psychology. The purpose of the sport and exercise psychology option is to educate students technically and professionally in the area of sport and exercise psychology. The focus is on assisting students in the design, implementation, and assessment of the psychological components of exercise, sport, and wellness programs. Through independent research and inquiry, students will solve sport and exercise psychology related problems associated with human movement and performance.

Graduate study leading to a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology is offered with two options: exercise science and sport psychology. The purpose of the exercise science option is to provide students with the technical and professional knowledge necessary for the assessment and improvement of human movement and performance. Students will be provided with information that will assist them in the design and implementation of programs that enhance human movement and performance. Through independent research and inquiry, students will solve problems associated with human movement and performance.

Why history at WWU? Western's History MA offers students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of historical methods and to produce an original work of scholarship. The MA thesis is filed with the library and in an online database available to researchers from around the world.

Western Washington University offers a Masters program in Geology that aims to prepare students for professional employment in geoscience careers in the Pacific Northwest and beyond or for continuing graduate studies at the doctoral level. We specialize in structure/tectonics, petrology, volcanology, geomorphology, geophysics, hydrogeology and environmental/engineering geology, geothermal energy, sedimentology, planetary geology, and geoscience education. The Geographic Information Science Certificate provides students with in-depth training in Geographic Information Science theory and techniques. Through an intensive series of courses in GIS, statistics, and remote sensing and the completion of original research projects, students will gain advanced skills in the development, management, analysis, and visualization of spatial data. The certificate prepares students for careers as geospatial analysts and GIS technicians.

The Experimental Psychology program provides an excellent preparation and foundation for students wishing to enter a psychology Ph.D. program. Our graduate program is based on a mentorship model in which each incoming student is paired with a faculty member with similar scholarly interests who will advise and mentor the student on his/her academic progress and scholarly activities. Graduates will have a solid background in research design, quantitative methods, and expertise in a specific research area.

The MA degree in Environmental Studies prepares students to address complex environmental problems using a highly interdisciplinary approach and significant student-faculty design of the course of study. Students gain proficiency in critical analysis, development, conservation, and management frameworks of environmental studies for careers in business, government, planning, consulting, teaching, and research.

The purpose of the Marine and Estuarine Science program (MESP) is to provide a coherent program of study in coastal marine and estuarine sciences at the M.S. level. This program focuses resources of existing Master's programs in the College of the Environment and the Department of Biology. It is a research-oriented program in the marine and estuarine sciences. Human impact on coastal marine and estuarine systems cannot be properly evaluated without a scientific understanding of their fundamental physical, chemical, and biological processes.
